Famous Female Gymnasts: 10 Athletes Who Shaped the Sport

Updated

Famous female gymnasts are remembered for different reasons: Olympic and World Championship records, technical innovation, longevity, cultural impact or changing what audiences thought was possible. This is not a universal ranking. It is a curated list of athletes whose influence can be traced through major results and the history of women’s artistic gymnastics.

10 Famous Female Gymnasts

1. Simone Biles

Simone Biles has the strongest modern record in women’s artistic gymnastics. USA Gymnastics lists her as the most decorated gymnast ever with 41 combined World and Olympic medals. That total includes 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals, with 23 World golds.

At Paris 2024, Biles helped the United States win team gold, won the individual all-around and vault titles, and took silver on floor exercise. Her importance is not limited to medal counts: multiple skills are named after her in the Code of Points, and her difficulty level helped reshape expectations in the sport.

2. Larisa Latynina

Larisa Latynina

Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina won 18 Olympic medals across the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Games. Her record for total Olympic medals stood for decades and remains one of the defining achievements in gymnastics history. She also won two Olympic all-around titles.

3. Nadia Comăneci

Nadia Comăneci

Nadia Comăneci became one of the sport’s defining figures at the 1976 Montreal Olympics when she received the first Olympic perfect 10 in women’s artistic gymnastics. Her performances became a landmark of the old 10.0 scoring era. Today’s elite FIG system is different; our gymnastics scoring guide explains the change from perfect-10 scoring to the current difficulty-plus-execution model.

4. Olga Korbut

Olga Korbut

Olga Korbut’s performances at the 1972 Munich Olympics helped transform the public image of women’s gymnastics. World Gymnastics credits the era of Korbut and Comăneci with driving a major revolution in the sport as acrobatics, television exposure and public interest increased.

5. Svetlana Khorkina

Svetlana Khorkina

Svetlana Khorkina was one of the most influential gymnasts of the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly on uneven bars. She won multiple World and Olympic titles and became known for adapting technique to her unusually tall frame rather than fitting a single body type or style.

6. Nastia Liukin

Nastia Liukin

Nastia Liukin won the 2008 Olympic all-around title in Beijing and collected five medals at those Games. Her success came early in the open-ended scoring era and showed how high difficulty, execution and presentation could still combine in an all-around programme.

7. Shannon Miller

Shannon Miller remains one of the most decorated American gymnasts of the pre-Biles era. She won seven Olympic medals across 1992 and 1996 and was a central member of the 1996 U.S. team that won the country’s first Olympic women’s team title.

8. Sunisa Lee

Sunisa Lee won the Olympic all-around title at Tokyo 2020 and returned at Paris 2024 to win team gold plus bronze medals in the all-around and uneven bars. Her comeback made her one of the defining American gymnasts of the current generation.

9. Rebeca Andrade

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade became one of the central figures of the Paris 2024 Games. She won floor exercise gold, all-around and vault silver, and team bronze. World Gymnastics records that those results made her the most successful Brazilian athlete in Olympic history, with six Olympic medals overall.

10. Gabby Douglas

Gabby Douglas won the 2012 Olympic all-around title and helped the United States win team gold in both 2012 and 2016. Her London victory made her the first Black woman to win the Olympic individual all-around title.

Paris 2024 Changed the Modern Record Book

The U.S. women’s team at Paris 2024 was Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Hezly Rivera. The team won gold. Biles left Paris with 11 career Olympic medals, while Lee added team gold and two individual bronzes. Rebeca Andrade’s four medals in Paris took her to six Olympic medals and made her Brazil’s most decorated Olympian.

How We Chose These Gymnasts

This list weighs Olympic and World Championship results, technical influence, historical significance and lasting impact on the sport. It is not intended to reduce different eras to one numerical ranking: equipment, rules, scoring systems and competitive depth have changed substantially over time.

Takeaway

Biles now owns the strongest combined World-and-Olympic medal record, but famous gymnasts are remembered for more than totals. Latynina set a longevity benchmark, Korbut and Comăneci helped transform the sport’s global appeal, and athletes such as Lee and Andrade continue to reshape the modern era.
